We (SJC) have been invited to try out the trails on an 800 acre property at Bylong.

Maggie and Bear will be doing the "jeepin campin" thing on the w/end 08--09 November. We will probably go up on Friday 07/11.

The land holder is insistant that people using his property are members of a club affiliated with 4WD Association, this is for insurance purposes. I have posted in Club Matters for financial members only for this reason

He is keen for us to use his property and has been very co-operative.

If any SJC members are interested please post a reply for more information.

Well, you already know that we'll be there! ;D
and with bells on.

Maybe post it on the AJOR site so we get other people affiliated with clubs (or who want to tag along as visitors).
The more the merrier I say. ;)

For the geographically challenged where is Bylong? Do you have any idea what kind of trails to expect? Sounds like a good opportunity though :)

Maverick and The Bear have some maps etc.
But basically it is out the back of Rylestone..... :D
Would be good to see you out there AJ.

When I was talking to Reg today he mentioned that this needed to be a small trip and financial club members only, the guy up there hasn't officially opened the site up yet and has invited us up to checkout the place and give some feedback in regards to tracks etc before he opens it up to the public. That's the reason it's for financial members only at the moment and posted in this section as its a reccie only. It's also to add it as an official trip, just incase :) So best not to post this one on Ausjeep.

Cheers

I have spoken to the land holder today and the dates are confirmed.

I have run off some maps for those of you that are going.
We will be at Menai Sun 26/10 so if you come and see me Iwill make them available to you and we can work out details on where to meet and convoy etc. before I post on the webb site.

The trip is w/end 8--9/11
Maggie and I are going up Friday 7/11. I believe Casey and Rebecca are coming up on Sat 8/11. At the moment I have no idea how many are coming and will post asking members to indicate their intention so I can advise the property owner how many vehicles/people to expect. Be advised this is the first time we have been there and have no idea what to expect in regards to the type of trails, or degree of dificulty, but if a toymota landcruiser can do it the jeeps should eat it.

Sorry guys I will be unable to attend this weekend. Hope you guys have fun and explore if inch of that property. Hopefully this could prove to be a great destination for club weekends in the future :)

If you can mark any good spots you find with GPS it should make it easier for finding them again in the future. ;)

Sorry, Bear, Maggie and the rest of the gang...

I have to back out as per doctor's advice. He's concerned with the jolts and bumps that might affect me. Still have 1 more week to go on "light duties".

Anyway, have a safe and enjoyable wheelin' n campin'. I missed out again.

Perfect trip to welcome a new member. The country in the Bylong valley is absolutely beautiful.

I agree with Maggie! It was a great weekend and the Bylong area is beautiful.

My first weekend away with the club, but also my first real 4wdriving!! Everbody was really great and they have been teaching me a lot. I got a lot of experience just over the weekend, especially thanks to Steve and Bruce who were patience enough to try and teach me. I cannot wait till the next trip.....after I get my tyre fixed.....

Fab! Was the drive to the venue ok? ie: did it feel too long, ok, managable?

wlublink
10-11-08, 12:23 PM
It is a long trip out there, but because we were with several cars we could chat over the radio and the scenery is just beautiful. So it is managable even if you drive on your own. We had a few stops on the way so that was good. I don't mind driving that far if I have a whole weekend to spent in an area like that.

It is a long trip .. we went Bells Line of Road on Friday so had a couple of hours after setting up camp and then a full day Saturday and half day Sunday.
Casey and Rebecca went with their navman and came on the Great Western Highway .. very long trip and not worth it for a two day weekend but they can tell you more about that.

So a long weekend is best then? I'm think of doing another towards the end of Jan if Bruce is OK with it, a 4 day one though Friday through to Monday. How many hours did it take to get there roughly?

We left McDonalds in Richmond around 0845 in the morning, stopped at Kandos to pick up Bruce, get fuel and had lunch there. I think we arrived at the campsite around 1400. Without stopping it is about 4 hours drive to the property. So yes a long weekend is the best.

We left Richmond at 8.45 am .. met our host at Kandos and were having lunch in the Kandos Bakery at around 11.30. Not sure what time we left there.
We then had a bit of a sight seeing tour and actually arrived at the property around 1.30 I think.
It was very hot there on Sunday, so the temperature might be a factor in January. Bruce is very keen for us to return.

Hi folk's,
Yes it was a good weekend wheeling.
Firstly I would like to thank Bruce for hosting us for the weekend.
Some neat side trips included and lot's of help without hesitation. We all learnt about the " water powered " stock coolers ??? ;) :) amongst other local treasures.
My speedo reading from Richmond Macca's, there, wheeling and return to Blacktown was 565k's via the Bells Line of Road. We had a good run there and back, cruising between 80/90k's per hour with some pit stops as well, as apposed to Casey and Rebecca's run on the Great Western Hwy.
I actually have some pic's of the weekend but need to wait for my comp. tech. to get home from school ::)
Thanks to all who came on the weekend as it was great fun 8)

We assembled at Maccas Richmond, 3 cars in convoy on the road at 0845.
Two stops on the way up then we met our host in Kandos, and were having lunch in the Kandos cake shop/bakery around noon.

Refueled to cover the running around over the w/end, fuel is cheaper there than Rylestone or Bylong(who don't accept credit cards).

After lunch we set off for the property. Just past Rylestone off into the bush, 15min hike, to view and photograph some Aboriginal cave paintings.

On to the property and set up camp.
While I stayed in camp everybody set off to try some of the tracks.
Up one side of a hill dodging between large rocks and small boulders, and down a very steep track on the other side. This was Dutchies first experience at 4wdriving,and the first time Maggie has tried without me in the car

Our host Bruce and his partner Tracy then demonstrated cooking a baked dinner on a campfire, while Maggie prepared a damper and then a bread and butter custard for dessert in the "Cobb"cooker.

After dinner Bruce led a night drive to see the wild life

Saturday the camp was awakened by Bruce at 0800 revving his chainsaw outside each tent.

After brekkie we went and played in and around the creek till lunch.

Off to the Goulburn River National park for the afternoon. This being a locked gate area the SJC was afforded the privilege of being allowed into the area for a photo shoot.
Dutchie managed to get herself bogged on a little beach and had to be snatched out by Maggie.
Back to camp where we were joined by Casey and Rebecca who managed to get in some wheeling along with the rest of the crew before dinner.
Dutchie wanted to see a wild wombat, so everyone except Maggie and Bear, took off for a night drive and they spotted one which tried to jump in the car when Rebecca opened the door.

Sunday reveille at 0800 with the chainsaw. I don't think Rebecca appreciated being woke in such a manner.
More wheeling and playing along the creek bed.
Lunch, break camp, pose for photo shoot then head back to the pub at Rylestone for a de-brief by Bruce. On to Kandos to refuel for the run home, parted company at Richmond Maccas over a cup of coffee.

Good time had by all

11-11-08, 10:35 AM
Whats with the chainsaw wake-up though - bit of fun or Bruce being an overly attentive host?? Sounds like he made a great effort to show everyone around but definately sounds like a long-weekend venue given the 5-600K round trip. If it was only really suitable for long-weekends Easter etc then the club might only get up there a couple of times a year, given that there are other events on over the longer breaks (Camp Coffs etc).

Maggie
11-11-08, 12:39 PM
Sometimes we can make our own long weekends as a lot of people have RDO's on Friday's for example .. 3 relaxing easy days is plenty on this property. Also some people work weekends and have days off through the week and could make it a mid week trip. There are plenty of possibilities.

The wake up call was either the chainsaw or bagpipes, and the chainsaw was the lesser of two evils.

The idea was to get everyone up and moving to be able to fit all that he wanted to show us into the available daylight hours.

The chainsaw was better than Bruce throwing a lizard inside your tent, Bear. He and his wife must be a very friendly and accomodating host. Hope I could go up there next time.

So did the door seals leak? Last JK I ran through some water with leaked like a sieve through the door seals (it was up at Lake Lyel about 12 months ago now)

JK hand brakes must be better than XJ and TJ ones ;) If it was a TJ you'd expect to get run over by your own Jeep about now :(
