Hi All

I am a newbie with only one real 4wd trip to wattagans with the club under my belt. i was going thru the post and Steve's comment about the rising river scared me a little bit, D u reckon my stock JK with no mods whatsoever will be able to negotiate the river etc?? just a thaught about hydrolocked engines scared me a tiny bit. please forgive my ignorance if my query sounds a bit dumb.

The pic through the river with my Jeep is the deeper entrance to it, it gets shallower further on and there is also a shallower entrance. You'll have no issues, and if it is up too high (which I doubt) we'll go another way.

This is after the deeper section in my first pic. The gap you can kinda see to the left and in front of the Jeep is the shallower entrance.

TRBN8R,

A tip for you, don't hit the water hard.
I've read quite a few threads on the USA Jeep forums about hydro locked engines,
and almost all had 1 thing in common, hitting the water too fast & hard.

Greg, we will meet you there at the ZigZag cark park at around 9.00ish? We can go on from there. We will be on Ch.15 so we will call ahead...

Steve,

09:00 at the Zig Zag Car park, locked in.

I have two 'guests' that may be meeting us at the carpark if there is room on the trip, one is Phill from OzAdventure4x4 who is keen to see Lithgow, and the other is a potential new member who made contact with me via the local Jeep dealer whom i have given a few cards to to hand out to new Jeep owners who are looking for someone to wheel with.....let me know so I can cofirm with them please.

Looks like we have 10 vehicles for the Sunday trip, not including the guys that go up on Saturday so maybe 14 so far!!! That's not including Gregs guests, might be getting pretty close to the limit or time for the cutoff with Gregs guests.... As long as we keep the trip moving we should be OK though (cross fingers for no rain). What do you think Steve?

Check the first post for a list, they're all there :)

So, to clear things up there will be three meeting points for the Sunday trip.

8:00am at Maccas Richmond for an 8:15am departure
9:00am at ZigZag Railway for a 9:00am departure, we'll just pass through so listen for us on channel 15
9:30am at the service station at the turn off to Lake Lyell, we'll stop here for fuel etc

If you're meeting at any of these spots and are going to be late call Steve T or myself and let us know, with such a big trip we wont know for sure who's meeting where and we dont want to leave anyone behind :)

Name: COLES EXPRESS LITHGOW
Address: Cnr Great Western Hwy And Rydal Roads
Town/Suburb: Lithgow

If this is the one, please confirm as I am staying in Lithgow overnight on Saturday night and would love an extra 30 minutes sleep in :-)

14-06-09, 08:23 PM
We're back, but only because we bugged out early - the last radio traffic we heard as we turned onto the GWH was the ongoing recovery of sbadman up a particularly slippery muddy climb, that was around 3pm.

The other mishap was a busted/sprained/dislocated knee as a result of misplaced footing that ended up in Lithgow hospital.

Steve F
14-06-09, 08:39 PM
Just a quick update because I have to rush out, Dave (owner of Bernies old Jeep) dislocated a knee and was taken to Lithgow hospital, he's still there but his mother and sister (I think) came up. Steve T, Casey or Vinnie can fill in the details.

The rest of us carried on with a long recovery of Scott on the climb up fro the water holes, only 4 of us did that track, luckily the rest got through OK. We also had some jambed up swaybar links stuck in the steering gear so had to take them off, they were bent pretty bad.

Other than that a great day and we got out around 4:30pm, hopefully Dave will recover quickly but he wont know what the prognosis is until later tonight.

I'm home :)

About an hour into the trip we were all lined up down a hill, do go into a small drop and then up another hill on the other side. We were standing about and watching the others ahead (there were 14 jeeps on todays trip - is that a record?).

Dave (DLE068) got out to have a chat to a few other guys he slipped into a rut just in front of his Jeep and fell in a way that caused him to dislocate his kneecap.

We collected our first aid kits together and got all the bandages from them for SteveT to apply to Dave's knee, using a hard icepack as a split to stop it moving and ease the swelling.

We tried a few times to get Dave into the passenger seat of his TJ, but there wasn't enough room. I was next in line after Dave, so we moved his Jeep off the track and I moved down the track for him to get in the back of The Colonel.

We then turned a few of the Jeeps around that were going to make the trip back to Lithgow hospital (Dave and I, Nadine in Vinnies Jeep, Vinnie in Dave's Jeep and Steve T). At the top of the hill we came across a local in a Defender going the other way. He offered to show us the quickest and easiest way out.

It was a petty we couldn't take more advantage of the tracks - awesome creek crossings, mud, hills, deep ruts!

Good thing we were there behind the Defender, on the way out the it found itself going sideways down a small slippery hill. I took a track along a creek and got in front of it (with Dave in the back) and snatched him out.

We eventually got back to the main road and then to Lithgow.
We got Dave into the ED at about 1pm.
By about 2.30pm I ahd to go home - leaving SteveT, Vin and Nadine at the hospital, so I'm not sure how Dave is now.

The recovery wasn't that long..... ::) Just a case of being stuck in the wrong rut and unable to get to the right one. Everyone else had lockers and 32"+ tyres, so with 30" and open diffs I was at a slight disadvantage! Perhaps next time when it's not so muddy....... :P

I'm not locked :) Open front and rear. It went pretty well in the end considering the location on the trail and how damn slippery it was. It wasn't a comment meant to offend or anything, either way it was by far the longest recovery of the day and could have happened to any of the 4 of us that took that track.

Home as well about an 1hr or so,
I left Dave at Lithgow Hospital just after 4.00p.m with his dad, mum and his sister. Basically Dave was waiting to see the orthopaedic specialist once he had finished surgery on another person. His right kneecap was dislocated and he ruptured/tore ligaments to his kneecap when he slipped and over flexed his knee, ouch :'( He was then saying he would then go to Nepean Hospital for possible surgery to repair ligament and tissue damage. He will be out of action either way for a couple of weeks for recoup.
I tagged with Scott and Wolfe from Lithgow to Nth Richmond where Wolfe stopped to wash down some mud from his wheels and air down a little as well. Scott stopped for a shampoo as well :o :). So I headed on home, I'll wash the ZJ tomorrow. Didn't get quite as dirty as some as it panned out for the day :)....

Thanks for a great day

we bailed out about 1:30 from the group as we needed to pick the camper up from Lake Lyell and the group where heading the opposite direction. Gotta agree with that, and the last run at it prior to the winching was just so close I thought he had it.... Also gotta remember that was one loooong climb, once committed no turning back, with plenty of spots that made it tough, even the last few meters getting over that mound on to the main track was enough to give us all some trouble. Now I wanna go back and do it again :)

My first trip and one of the best experiences. It exceeded my expectation and I'm sure all those that attended would agree. You just had to see teh smiles on people even when it started to rain. Every one was friendly and helpful and were treated equally regardless of experience and type of truck & how much or little modifications to their truck . It showed me what a great club this is and I look forward to many more outings. It was good to see that everyone had options to tackle a track or not, which every one respected.
I wish Dave a speedy recovery too.

I dropped my Jeep of this morning at the Stealership as it is impossible to drive in the wet, it looks like the front diff has damaged the spider gears and every now and again it binds up, makeing it like a locked diff. Not a lot of fun on the rain on slippery roads, especially when the alignement is out at the nanny computer is disabled.....made for lots of fun on the way to the dealer this morning though, no traction control, random steering, wet roads, heavy right foot.....

I'll let everyone know what I broke this trip when i hear back from the stealership later today....should be warranty again (hopefully)

i dont hear about a lot of breakages from the petrol owners.

Steve F
18-06-09, 01:31 PM
Petrol owners buy the Rubicon maybe? CRD runs the D30 front end.

So sounds like it was more than just the swaybar banging on the coils, I guess when it's intermittent it's hard to diagnose.

the CRD's put out more torque than the petrol motor... might be pushing the D30 past its capabilities?

sucks that your jeep is in the workshop again Greg.
Hope its out soon.

Miraz
18-06-09, 02:21 PM
I think this is the case - remember that the CRD is offered with the D44 as an option.

I managed to grab a JK D44 axle off ebay locally earlier in the year, so I will have a spare D30 if Greg's repair starts to look expensive.

Got the Jeep back on Friday morning, drove OK. They replace the front steering damper and advised that they test drove without issue.

Funny thing, it drove fine to work, and back home again. Then when I was coming back from shopping the hard steering, followed by a loud metallic 'bang' and steering came back, so it looks like they didn't even touch the front end. The car is parked on the lawn at the moment and I am driving my brothers car till I can ring Jeep on Monday and ask them WTF?

The servcie manager has advised that I should have my car detailed before I try for a warranty claim (they did replace the steering damper under warranty) again. Apparently we are not supposed to take the cars off-road and get them dirty.

Kind of defeats the point of buying an off road car doesn't it, especially a Wrangler!

It's a cunning warranty ploy....the manual clearly states that you shouldn't engage drive to the front axle unless you are offroad, the warranty folk won't let you make a claim if you went offroad...cunning!

Good thing the Wranglers don't have a Full Time option then ;)

I dont think they mind you taking your car offroad - thats what they are built for - it just makes it hard to diagnose problems and a pain to work on when they are covered in mud.

It also gives the appearance that you dont look after your vehicle when you bring it in for warrantee work covered in dirt, which might have an impact on their decision to cover the repairs.

This is a good point. I'm kind of anal about it, and it probably comes from practice of washing army vehicles as soon as we get back to the depot, but regardless of how late or how knackered I am, I'll always stop by the car wash and hit the Jeep with a pressure hose to get all the crap off her. Its amazing the amount of stuff that comes out if you know where to hose!

She doesn't have to shine, but I at least get the mud off the underside.

PS. since this trip I've not fitted the new front bar.. and a set of 5 new Goodyear MTRs! Can't wait for the next trip!!

Start a thread in Club Matters and post them in there, only club members can see them then.

Absolutely right. I hose under every nook and cranny, Its amazing how much get's caught. Then I re do it again a few hours later and more stuff comes out!!!. It's worth the effort.

Does any one have a GPS route of this trip we did recently? I seemed to have not had it recorded on my GPS. Thanks

Brian and I will be running an easy trip in the morning then an optional harder section of hill climbs in Jenolan state forrest
