I was wondering wether the front drivers side ring at the front and the rear hoop on the passengers side re the actual recovery points where one would snatch from???

Hi Mate

I have a JK Unlimited. I have done heaps of snatching with both front and rear standard recovery points or whatever you wanna call them. I recently installed Mopar front recovery hooks, and rear Rugged Ridge tow hitch mounted recovery shackle. While installing the front hooks i realised that the front standard ring type recovery point was made from the same material and installed at the exact same point as the new hooks, only difference was one facing up and other facing down. and the rear hook appears strong enough as well. I got a good deal from Wooders on the hooks etc so i got them for the peace of mind, but i see nothing wrong with the standard gear as well.

Cheers

Both front and rear hitches/AKA recovery points on the JK are rated for exactly that - so just use them if you need them.

The standard recovery points depend on what year model JK you have. Mine is a 08 and didn't come with any fixed tow or hitching point on the front of the car at all but the manual said I could be towed from a point accessible through a round hole in the front plastic air dam. All that was accessible from this point was another round hole in a thin sheet metal bracket that goes between the two chassis rails. I wouldn’t connect anything to that point for any reason at all.

While the obvious fixed tow points on the JK can be used for recovering just remember that while Jeep say you can tow and recover from them they are not designed specifically as recover points. Their main purpose is as tie down points to be used to secure the car onto the deck of the ship during international transport. Sure they work as recovery points but they’re not really designed for the job. If you can easily snap a snatch strap that’s rated to 8,000kg’s during a recovery what kind of forces must be created? How high could they go? Pulling a 4WD from a bog when it’s buried in the mud over the axils? Pretty bloody high. You should be using fittings that were specifically designed for the forces involved, not just ones that were designed for another use and were making do as recovery points.

I’d feel safer using specialised recovery points like the ones on the front and rear of Manni’s rig, the genuine recovery hooks that can be fitted to the front of the standard Jeep bumper and the rear recovery hitch that fit’s into the tow bar. They are specifically designed to be used for recoveries and are the most cost effective solution too, heaps cheaper than getting new bumpers with recovery points. I’d use the standard points for the time being but I’d be looking at upgrading them as soon as possible.
