View Full Version : Squealing noise rear right wheel......

Hi Guys,

Last few days I have been noticing a rhythmic squealing noise from the rear right wheel of my Jeep. I took out the rear pads on both sides and sandpapered them a bit and the noise went away for a while. Its back now. It is more evident when I am going round a slight right hand bend in the road. I put the Jeep on the stands today and asked my wife to put it in drive and drive a bit. The wheels are not wobbly at all, so hopefully that negates bent axle. The brake pads have about 70% life still left in them, that negates worn pads. I am thinking the disks might have been warped when I went deep water diving at Lake Lyle with some workmates couple of months back. I am thinking of getting the rear brakes machined.

Am I heading down the right track or is there something else I need to look at......

Any advice will be appreciated....

Cheers

Mani - You could try some CRC "Disc Brake Quiet" It is in a little orange coloured bottle you can get from Auto-one , Repco etc. You put a little of the goo on the back of the brake pads (between piston and pad) and it stops the squeel. Well it worked for me anyway.

Mani.
These kinda things really suck to diagnose. I think you are on the right track by thinking brakes. It could be grooved/slightly warped/unevenly worn rotors, you could have them machined. It could be a sticking caliper piston, you could rebuild them. The way you say it is a rhythmic noise makes it sounds like more then noisy pads so I would not worry about them unless they have obvious signs of grooving or uneven wear. It could possibly (and I mean a remote chance based on your description of the problem) that it is a rear wheel bearing on it's way out. But they usually tend to fail all at once in a semi-floating axle and so I would say to take that option off the table for the time being. Good luck.

Thanks Guys,

I will try the "Disk Break Quiet" thing tomorrow. Hopefully that works if not get the discs machined and go from there. Hope that fixes everything....

If it's the brakes sqealing then the noise often changes when you brake. It may stop when you apply the brakes and come back when you come off the brakes or may get worse when you brake and better when you don't. Does that happen to your car or does the noise stay the same regardless of whether you're braking or not? If the noise is always the same it probably (not definately) isn't your brakes.

Hi Tony,

The symptoms are exactly as you mentioned. It is very faint when going streight, goes up going around when going around right hand bends, becomes irritating when brakes are half presses, disappears when braking firmly.

Gonna try Disk Brake Qiet as mentioned by Ian, if it doesnt fix gonna machine them......

Mani - you better sell it!!!

No - seriously, I have the same problem! though I can not work out which wheel it is coming from (the V8 disguises the noise somewhat). If it varies depending on braking pressure, I suspect it would be the disks rotors are slightly warped/grooved. Why not get it checked out at a specialist brake place, some will analysis it for free.
The spray, while is a good idea can certainly make it quieter but does not give it a permanent fix though and works only if you follow the instructions carefully, which from memory means disassembling the brakes, cleaning and spraying - but check the bottle

To find out the source of the noise I put the Jeep on stands (both front and rear), Got my wife to get into the Jeep, engage 4WD high and drive and break at different speeds, while I was walking around the Jeep.....

Try that and it will give you the chance to listen to each wheel individually..........

Have you given any thought to the fact it could be the hand brake shoes rubbing, with no friction material left on them.

Thanks Bear

that gives me another avenue to explore. Not using the Jeep this week, will look at it at the weekend.........

Hi Mani,

I'll second Bear's handbrake idea. Mine needed replacing last year, before that they were making squealing and other 'disturbing' noises. When they were taken apart I was down to metal on metal.

Thanks guys

I took the brakes apart, lubed up the slides with some high temp grease. The metal plate glued and riveted to the back of the pads were coming lose and vibrating. Thanks to Ian I glued the plate back to the pads then glued the pads to the pistons using CRC Disk Brake Quiet. Results are wonderful no more irritating noises.

Me Very Happppyyyyyyyyyy :) ..........

Thanks everyone for the advice......
