View Full Version : SYEs for NP242, will the XJ one fit the KJ?

Folks, I have an opportunity to buy a NP242 SYE (originally intended for an XJ - the one Mitch (AJOR) is selling). Here it is (it's a hack and tap one):

Does anyone know if the XJ NP242 and the KJ NP242J are identical as far as the output end is concerned and if this SYE could be used on a KJ? I am told that early XJs and later model ones were different in that the later ones had the boot on the output shaft. I know I would need a new rear drive shaft as well, and I'd get a double cardan one.

Of course Tom Wood sells a much more ambitious SYE for the Liberty but its much more expensive as well.

I don't think anyone in Oz running a SYE on a KJ yet.

I'm looking for a complete rear drive solution that eliminates the 3" lift driveline vibes I'm getting under the much stronger torque output of the GDE flash tune. Perhaps the double cardan shaft is all I need? Opinions?

Cheers
Glen

Got any pics of the ouput shaft or a spline count?

Hi Steve, according to my research (from Drivetrain.com) my (aka Liberty) NP242J has a 23 spline input, and a 32 spline rear slip.
I should have done an eyeball/physical count the last time I had the shaft out to grease the slip shaft. It has a flange at the end of the output shaft that bolts up to the harmonic balancer (flywheel thingee).

Looks like I might have just answered my own question. According to Drivetrain.com at:

http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_catalog/transfer_case_replacements_and_parts/jeep.html#LIBERTY

The output shaft spline count is different between the XJ and the KJ, even though the transfer case is the same designation. It appears that Mitch's SYE is a 27 spline so I would need to replace the yoke with a 32.
