Whilst poking about under the bonnet of our trusty old Camry I found the auto tranny dipstick, Now e all know the dipstick on J K auto boxes pop out when they get hot but the Camry has a simple little sprung clip to hold it in, its such a simple thing, why couldn't Jeep have put one of these on our cars ??? Have the same problem with the KJ. What I did was make a loop of wire out of coathanger, and attached to to the pipe with a hose clamp. Now the plastic dipstick handle/cover is pinched between the pipe and the wire and it does not move.

I'd attach a picture, but have had no luck with them lately either.

IMO if dipsticks are popping out, the transmission is building up too much pressure. By securing the dipstick into place you may be creating another problem. If the transmission still continues to build pressure and the dipstick won't blow out, the next weakest link may be a transmission seal. The transmissions should have a breather on them. It may be worth locating the breather, pulling it out and giving it a good clean up.

Its a common problem on JK's from new, and its a problem Jeep know about. Eddie tells me it can happen when the gearbox is over filled as well. Doggy Dave.

Agree with Elio S, I've gone through 2 transmissions and the specialist and Chrysler are still trying to workout the cause, the second time oil came out of the breather hose, but they did mention that if it builds up pressure it will escape from breather or the dipstick, they went on to explain that when the transmission oil gets hot it increases in volum also a Chrysler engineer from the states suggested we fill up to the lower hole on the dipstick not the top one.

Just incase you weren't aware the crd don't have a trans oil warning when it gets hot, monitoring the trans temp is recommended and adding a trans oil cooler will help as I I'm currently doing.

The dip stick is to long some guys in the states are just cutting a little of the bottom me I just wraped some self fusing tape around it and fits in and stays there that's around the outside tube guys have pulled the transmission pan out and seen the scratches in the bottom of it common on the crd
