Hi Jeepels,

Long time no see due to new roster clerk not doing her job properly and screwing up all the weekends for me for the last few months. I got a weekend off and am planning a trip to Lake Lyle on Sunday 06/07/2014. It will be a C Grade trip. Covering the usual route from the quarry to the big climb, Cox's River crossing and then to Mt Walker. Mt Walker is a good B Grade but is optional depending on interest and time. Time will be aprox 8am departure to 5pm return to Richmond Meccas. Please read the details below and post up if interested.

When: Sunday 06/07/2014
Where: Lake Lyle
Trip Grade: C+ (B Options with bypasses available)
Numbers: 15 Including me.
RV Point 1: 0730Hrs McDonalds, March Street, Richmond 0730Hrs for breakfast. 0800Hrs on the road.
RV Point 2: 0930Hrs Shell Servo, 1 Great Western Hwy, South Bowenfels.
Expected time of return to RV Point 1: 1700Hrs
Vehicle Requirements: Good AT or MT Tyre 31inch and above. Standard JKs, TJs, XJs, KJs and similar Jeeps welcome but a minor 40 mm lift is advisable to avoid dragging the underbelly over the rocks. Doing this trip in a KK Cherokee and similar cars with extra low front bumper and side steps and is not advisable due to foreseeable damage.
Must have 2 Way radio, Recovery points front and rear, Recovery straps, Adequate food and water.
Bring Kids, Family, Cameras etc as you please.
(For Mt Walker 2 inch lift, 33 inch tyres and at least one locker are now must as the midway approach has now been gated off, leaving only the gnarly approach open.)

Attendees:

1. Mani @ TRBN8R @ Richmond McDonalds
2. Fussy @ Richard and Sharon @ Shell servo Lithgow
3. DanD @ Dan @ Shell servo Lithgow
4. Dave @ DK @ Shell Servo Lithgow

(HOPEFULLY!!!)

My last exam is on Tuesday 1 July...

I AM DEFINITELY IN FOR THIS!!!!

Please put a reserve on number 4 as I still need to get another SJC member paid up and registered (yeah, I'm getting to it - the hold up is me lol)

In saying that, the new Jeep owner is not lifted, has only the standard tyres, but has just installed disconnects - would it be better that they come with me or can they bring their own rig up to the the Mt Walker part?

Hi Dan, The new guy can definitely attend the trip in his Jeep. Mt Walker is optional only and not everyone will attempt it. It will be wise to leave his car at the base when we attempt Mt Walker.

Hi Mate, am definatley interested in coming, but will be dependant on which day of the weekend my mother in law is going to celebrate her birthday. My WG Grand has 2" block lift, rock sliders and mud tyres. I know Mt Walker will probably be a no go zone for me, but how do you think it'll handle the rest?

If anyone heading straight for the servo at South Bowenfels want a pre-meet to convoy up there - can meet up at the servo on the left, just past Blaxland maccas on the GWH - Google maps reckons that its 1hr 17mins to get there (right now) to leave time for brekky (30 odd mins with fuel up) , would be a 7:30am departure from Blaxland (roughly).

Though... theres always the Lapstone hotel to meet up at for brekky :P

We can always meet @ Blaxland Maccas less than 20 seconds back down the road - only caveat with that - is that you need to turn right @ the lights at the Maccas to get in there.

Hi guys,

I arrived at out first meeting point Richmond McDonals at sharp 0730 and for the first time I was the first one to reach the meeting point. 4 other members Joined up and after a goos breakfast we left for Lithgow at 0815. We reached Lithgow at about 0930 and met up with the rest of the team at the Shell servo. and for the first time no one from the final list dropped out. We had a final convoy of 14 Jeeps.

We finally left the bitumen at about 1030 and aired down and disconnected. The convoy had a variety of models and modification levels varying from DK in a monster TJ to Allabaster in a stock JKU with swaybar disconnects. We started our trip with a play at The Quarry. The AULRO guys were doing their driver training and were kind enough let us through. We played around at the Quarry for a while and then went around the hill to climb it from the rear. The rut at the back was interested and provided some good entertainment. We drove along the Cox's river and got to the little hill beforeThe Powerlines Climb. It was again an easy C grade climb. Afterwards we all did the Powerlines climb with people taking different approaches dependng on the modifications and experience. From here onwards all the track has been graded to Rav4 standard providing little excitement. We drove down to the Cox's River and everyone enjoyed driving through the river. We stopped for lunch at about 1230. After lunch we attempted the little but challenging climb next to our lunch spot. A couple of cars made the climb and I failed in my both attempts.... Leaning the Jeep over at a dangerous angle and scaring the hell out of my passenger. (I still blame the failure on my long wheelbase ;) ;) ;) ) We went onto Mount Walker and both the approaches to Mt Walker were open contrary to information on AJOR regarding the easy approach being gated off. 5 Jeeps climbed Mt walker and we headed off to the pine forest after Mt Walker. All the road after The Powerlines Climb has been graded to Rav4 standard. The grader left behind some 2 dozen or more strange humps which caused my shocks to bottom out a few times. We crossed the pine fores and aired up on the side of the Great Western Hwy. We went our own way home from there about 1530. I was at Richmond Meccas by 1700.

I didnt have a camera so couldnt take any pics. I am sure the guys with GoPros and cameras will fill in with pictures.

Thanks guys for all the nice comments and good to hear that everyone enjoyed themselves.

And to Allabaster yes a couple of inches of lift is a mod worth the money and make a great deal of difference especially on a JKU by lifting the belly away from those rocks.

Happy Jeeping and see you guys again soon.

Mani

Just washed my car and did a mandatory underbody inspection.... The fuel tank bash plate has been bashed a bit more.... No biggie...A propper after market bash plate coupled with a new cross member is already on the menu for early next year..... Next came the front end and noticed a missing cap on the driverside uni joint..... New one going in tomorrow....

Just highlights the importance of thoroughly checking the underbely after every trip.......
