View Full Version : TJ Recovery Points

Hi,

I have a TJ with stock bumpers on it. I have two recovery points up front but only have a tow bar at the rear. I really don't want to use the tow bar with recovery hitch. I have had a search around on this forum and others and found lots of different opinions. I figured ask here since I would be going out with you guys the most. I will only be going C grade till I get bumpers and rock sliders so I hope I don't need them till then.

I was thinking of mounting two hooks to the rear on the chassis rated hooks. Is this enough? Or do I need to do something more? I was thinking of something like these hooks (http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Ridge-Ryder-Tow-Hook-Kit-Black-4500kg/105542?menuFrom=1021387) .

The rear tow bar will work fine for recoveries................. I used my tow bar with a recovery hitch on my old ZJ with nil issues and on other TJ,s that I have owned and used for recovery........................

Tow bar with shackle/hook fitting is far superior to just a hook on the chassis.
More bolts to hold it inplace,
Load is shared between both rails,
Pull the vehicle straighter

Even with a 1-1/4" receiver? All the shackles I can find are only 2"

I suppose just use the pin and put the strap in the receiver would do the same job and be just as strong. It just wouldn't look as pretty

Agreed the 1.25" receiver is a bit of a joke.
But still more solid than a tow hook (or should be).
I would use the pin directly through the strap for now and I'd keep an eye out for a 2" hitch.

Thanks, I just measured and it's 40mm So it's right in between the 2" and 1.25".

DO NOT rely on the captive nut inside the chassis, as they are NOT High Tensile nuts and have in the past pulled the thread clean out.
