This may be the last run up this famous track for us. For those not familiar with the trail it is an iconic B grade run with few options or chicken tracks. It's been slated for closure by Parks for some time, not yet though. West of Sydney starting from Capertee which can make it a long day. Mostly, well prepared vehicles go fine but we have seen some damage on this trail that is well past "cosmetic".

The trail runs through some incredible environment - this trip is very definitely "tread softly" care for the environment, pack out more than you pack in.

Kerry and I are making a bit of a special occasion of this. We have booked into Hydro Majestic on the Friday Night and may possibly stay at Capertee pub on Saturday. You are welcome join us on both but it is not part of the trip as such.

Where Mount Airlie (Genowlan Point Trail)
When Saturday 26th October 2019
Meet Meet in Capertee in the park. Shop is open and has fuel. You can get breakfast there but you need to allow time as country service is not as quick as Mackers ;-)
Time Leave early from Sydney! Plan to be at Capertee for 8:30please. We head out at 9:00am sharp, sorry but late means you may miss us.
Grade B Grade with a gnarly step at the mid point.
Requirements Recovery points Front/Rear, recovery gear, radio, food/drink of choice, camera. Ideally 2" lift and off road tyres - this is not a stocker run, though Rubicon should be fine as long as you trust the stock rock rails (99.99% sure they will be tested hard in action).

Front vehicle needs a winch as back up for the step - some trips just have not managed the step without winching. Winches are not mandatory but appreciated

This run is limited to: Ideally groups should be kept to max 8. I'll look to split the group perhaps if it get's larger. We took 30+ at Jambo but really don't want to do that again.

Dru and Kerry: 0419 855 121 (tel:0419 855 121)

When posting please advise vehicle and name (not just user name)

I would love to do this run to help farewell you both, but alas, know the limitations of my WH Grand.

I trust this will be a memorable trip for all involved.

Enjoy

Ben.

Absolutely! Need your name (not just user ID). What type of Jeep are you wheeling?

Just remember this is a challenge level trail, not all Jeeps are suited.

Hi all
John and I are going up Friday night to set up camp at newnes just past Lithgow about 30 minutes
Going to stay there Friday and Saturday night if any one wants to join us let me know

High Fred and Astrid - what is your experience level and training? This trip is one of the more challenging trips that SJC does regularly. It is the only trail I have had to abandon a damaged vehicle once only but not something I want to repeat. :highly_amused: Also rock rails are absolutely necessary. Most Jeeps go through fine and it really is an extraordinary place but there is risk in B grade.

But otherwise, yes of course you would be welcome. Let me know what you think.

DruHi Dru
Sorry for the late reply.
I fully understand your concerns on talking an unknown person in this trip.
We are always concerned when talking unknown members from our current club on trips we run
We will sit this one out and hopefully get on the next one when we join the club.

Conditions update.

1/ There is a fire ban across all National Parks, basically for summer.
2/ There is helicopter shooting (aka "aerial pest control") happening on Tuesday. Let's hope that conditions are satisfactory as we really want them finished before the weekend.

Update to be posted as we get closer.

Hi Dru,

Hi there! It was great catching up with you yesterday. This one is tricky - so let's start with, sorry Mt Airlie is not for you right now.

That said - yes a stock Ruby will climb Mt Airlie. The problem is the risk of damage is high, and in particular the stock rock rails are just not up to the job at the rock step pinch point on this track. You WILL end up hung on the rock rails at this step, IF you don't ram the canyon wall. The risk of panel damage just isn't sensible on such a new Jeep.

I'd suggest keeping an eye out for the following trails as you build your JL's experience:
Spanish Steps, Moon Rock, Son of Bob: Newnes
CPT80, Green's Break: Watagans.
Mt Walker: Rydel
Monkey Gum, Middle Earth: Yalwal.

Definitely Yalwal.

All the best guys!

Query on time was from Jared.

Will sort out Saturday night at the time. Remember that National Parks introduced a fire ban from October to March. No bonfires or camp fires. Gas cookers are OK in a clear area with water handy.

I think it went pretty well. Was my first time doing the track.
Had 1 bent drag link on Jareds TJ. Every one got winched up the step with a couple winching on the first hill climb.
I didn't get any photos but there were a lot of people with cameras.
