As I recall the ADR's for towing were introduced in 1989.
Before that often vehciles weren't clearly rated.
As a rule of thumb - don't tow heavier than your vehicle.
If you have or can find the original owners manual it would be worth checking.
And if you are looking, I;d like to know about my !984 CJ8 or 1982 J20 too ;)

Major concern in towing with CJ or Wrangler is the Wheel Base.
A SWB vehicle will put you in a precarious position downhill or at speed. The Tare weight of standard CJ7 is 1500kg. Payload of 386kg gives you 1886kg Gross vehicle weight. Max to ever tow with this vehicle and with great care is around 800kg. They were originally rated as not appropriate for towing attachments and AMC provided a bizarre formula to calculate towing weight for the FSJ's. When that formula is applied to CJ7 you end up with negative towing weight recommendation.
