    Default Engine oil

    Hi,

What oil do you guys use? The manual recommends 5W-20 for my JK but the dealership has been using Caltex 5W-30 Eco 5. It conforms to the Chrysler MS 6395 specifications.
I really want to start doing the oil changes myself. The JK is still under warranty and I'll probably void the warranty however it is becoming just too expensive to have it serviced by them.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Cheers

Find yourself a mechanic you trust and get him to do it. When my 07 Rubicon was still under warranty I got my mechanic to do the servicing, he is a lot cheaper than the dealer, and he used Jeep warranty service book to ensure that all required service items were covered. He has always used Penrite oil.

I still use the mechanic to service the Jeep as I am unable to do so due to age and physical disability.

Seconding Bear's suggestion! Find a good mechanic near where you live - if you are anywhere near Blacktown, Eddy (ex Parramatta Jeep Service and awesome mechanic) has just opened a workshop there specialising in Jeeps etc. A mechanic will probably charge half what Jeep would, and shouldn't void your warranty.

    Hi,
In NSW its illegal for a vehicle company to 'void' your warranty if you have the vehicle serviced according to the book, by a licenced mechanic/shop. They may be able to weasel out of a claim if non-genuine parts are used, and contributed to the fault.
I've used Penrite oil in everything I've owned since Berrima Diesel Service put me onto it for my Patrol many years ago. Great stuff.

    Hi again,

Thanks for all the info. Dave can you give me the details of your mechanic please?
If I do decide to do it myself I'll look into the Penrite range of oils.
I feel like telling the stealership I'll be taking my business elsewhere and see if they offer me a discount.

    Cheers.
PS do you guys know any good mechanics in Ryde?

    Hi Cobus,
I've been in the trade for 25 + years and won't use anything other than penrite. You can find out what sort of oil you need simply by going on their website and putting in you're vehicles details. If you choose however to get a professional to do the servicing, out your way there is VM Automotive at 19 Higginbottom Rd in Gladesville 98096616 or Les Anderson Mechanical Repairs & Service Centre at 47 Buffalo Rd Gladesville 98702100. I don't know them personally, but both these guys are NRMA approved repairers. What this means is they pay the NRMA a premium to be able to display the brand name out the front of their businesses, and as such are scrutineered heavily by NRMA Motoring and Services to ensure they don't tarnish the brand name, assuring you won't be taken for a ride.
