Hi guys, newbie just ordered a Wrangler
Thought I'd say hello and ask the usual beginner questions. My wife and I returned to Aus after a 10 year UK sabbatical. 7 years later and we are finally stepping back into the 4wd world. (Long gap I know.)
Our previous car was a Lada Niva, went more places than you might imagine. This time it's the three door Rubicon. Our target play areas are likely to be day and weekend trips, but likely involving increasing driver challenge as we settle back into the sport.
Question: what initial training would you recommend? We won't put a winch on for a couple of months. But would look to a "tirfer" or similar (hope that still means something). Don't need high end advanced training to start with, but would be useful if the course conditions suited a Rubicon.
and what recommendations for hand winch and basic recovery kit?
Cheers

Hey Dru,
Welcome to the club, mate I would just pop your name down for the next trip and see how you go, plenty of people can help along the way. Look forward to seeing you out on the tracks.

+1 for a tag along for the next trip. Plenty of info on the net and mags for basic and full recovery kits. I would use the hand winch as a last resort if you're stuck and on you're on your own. You could also use the highlift jack as a hand winch but it's hard yakka. As a minimum I would have:
Rated front and rear tow points / D shackles
Rated Snatch Strap
Rated Tow Rope
extras:
2 way radio :5W
first aid kit
winch
winch line tarp thingo
leather gloves
tree trunk protectors
D shackles
Maxtrax
fullsize spade
air compressor
tyre deflator
tyre pressure gauge
tyre puncture kit
tools
the list goes on... Please add
hand winching is hard work but you could look at a few options:
tirfor
the more power puller
highlift jack as a winch
unofficial training via youtube, plenty of videos and how to's.

The Niva was sensational.
we had to pick up the Rubicon from Brisbane as the Suttons wait was too much. Winch is now added to the options (basic Mopar). Think we have a fortnight before we can pick it up though.
looking forward to getting out their Presidente!
